A first U.S. edition, first printing of James Martin’s remarkably forward-looking 1982 book Application Development Without Programmers, published by Prentice-Hall as part of the James Martin Books on Computer Systems and Telecommunications series.

Written when business computing still depended heavily on specialized programmers, Martin examines a problem that sounds strikingly contemporary: how can ordinary users create useful computer applications without having to become traditional programmers?

The book surveys the emerging technologies that were beginning to make that possible, including database query languages, application generators, report generators, graphics tools, electronic mail, information-retrieval systems, fourth-generation languages, and other forms of end-user computing. Martin argues that organizations could reduce their enormous programming backlogs by giving users increasingly sophisticated tools for building and modifying their own applications.

In historical context, the book reads as an early precursor to today’s low-code and no-code software platforms. Decades before terms such as “citizen developer” became common, Martin was already describing layered systems in which users could progress from simple database inquiries and calculators to report generation, graphics, decision support, and eventually full application generation without working directly in conventional programming languages.

The illustrated “Levels of Sophistication” diagram is particularly revealing: its progression from electronic mail and database inquiry through graphics, reporting, decision support, application generation, and high-level languages anticipates many ideas now built into modern business software and visual development platforms.

The book also documents a transitional moment in computing history. Its examples include technologies such as COBOL, PL/I, Query-by-Example, IBM systems, IDMS, NOMAD, database query languages, minicomputers, terminals, and early information centers—a world in which interactive computing was expanding rapidly but personal computing had not yet transformed the workplace.

Today, Application Development Without Programmers is useful both as a vintage computer-science reference and as a historical artifact from the period when the software industry was beginning to reconsider who should be able to create computer applications.
