Published by John Wiley & Sons in 1964, Roy Brewer's Fabric and Mineral Analysis of Soils is a landmark work in soil micromorphology—the study of soil structure and composition at microscopic scales.

Rather than treating soil simply as a mixture of minerals and organic material, Brewer developed a systematic vocabulary and method for describing how its components are actually arranged in three dimensions. Using microscopic examination of thin sections, researchers could investigate pores, mineral grains, coatings, nodules, biological structures and other features while preserving their spatial relationships.

The approach proved influential. Brewer's system has been described in later scientific literature as the first systematic method suitable for describing essentially any soil or regolith material microscopically. His terminology and classification system helped establish soil micromorphology as a rigorous analytical discipline and influenced the international systems that followed.

Roy Brewer was an Australian pedologist and micropedologist with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). After beginning his career in soil surveying in 1941 and serving with the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, Brewer increasingly concentrated on microscopic soil analysis. His research sought to connect structures visible under the microscope with the processes responsible for soil formation and behavior.

Fabric and Mineral Analysis of Soils became his most significant publication. By the time Brewer retired from CSIRO in 1979, the International Society of Soil Science reported that the book had already been cited more than 270 times and had become a Citation Classic, crediting it with significantly expanding the use of soil micromorphology not only in soil science but also in fields including Pleistocene geology and soil zoology.

The book is substantial, containing 470 pages and 133 figures. Its first portion addresses mineral constituents and analytical methods, while the larger and more original portion develops Brewer's detailed system for describing soil fabric and microscopic structures.
