From a Nation on the Frontlines of Climate Change

The Marshall Islands consist of 29 coral atolls and 5 low-lying islands in the Pacific Ocean near the equator. Home to over 36,000 people, they are among the most climate-vulnerable places on Earth. With average elevations of just 2 meters, the entire nation faces existential threats from rising sea levels, saltwater intrusion, and intensifying storms—challenges already underway.

At the center of this island nation is Majuro Atoll, the capital and most populous district. Majuro serves as both the political center and a symbol of Marshallese identity, shaped by thousands of years of human history. Yet by mid-century, it may no longer be habitable.

Since 1993, sea levels in the region have risen over 20 centimeters, with projections indicating an additional 50 to 100 centimeters by 2100. By the 2030s, Majuro is expected to experience regular wave-driven over wash events, contaminating freshwater supplies and making daily life increasingly unsustainable.

This fragment of a government-issued license plate—sun-scorched, salt-pocked, and broken—is more than debris. It represents a final trace of order and governance in a place gradually being reclaimed by the sea. Once a tool of civic life, this plate now stands as a symbol of a fading human presence, a civic fossil from a world slipping beneath the waves.

Majuro is not alone. More than 1,000 low-lying islands worldwide—from Tuvalu to the Maldives—face similar futures. Up to 300 million people could be displaced from coastal areas by the end of the century. The loss is not just physical—it is cultural. Entire languages, traditions, and histories may vanish along with the land. This fragment, like others, becomes a relic of memory, not myth—evidence of history unfolding in real time.

A note on our Disappearing Island Artifacts:

"Within our lifetime, references to these island cities and villages—many inhabited for centuries—will shift into the past tense. This is no mythical Atlantis. These are real homes to real people—living cultures now on the front line, our modern-day canaries in the global mineshaft, warning us all, if only we’d pay attention."
