The djembe or jembe is traditionally a hand-played goblet drum with a rope-tuned skin covering, originating in West Africa. According to the Bambara people of Mali, the name of the djembe is derived from the greeting "Anke djé, anke bé", which expresses a sentiment of communal peace and harmony. Djembes are played at important ceremonies, for gatherings and as a centering practice.
