A substantial vintage work of sedimentary geology by pioneering French geologist Lucien Cayeux, translated and updated for English-language readers by geologist Albert V. Carozzi.

Originally published in French in 1935, Cayeux's study of carbonate rocks was produced during the formative decades of modern sedimentary petrology. His detailed investigations of limestones and dolomites helped establish microscopic and petrographic approaches to sedimentary rocks at a time when much of academic geology remained focused on igneous and metamorphic processes. Later historians of geology have recognized Cayeux as an important precursor to modern carbonate sedimentology, particularly for his observations concerning recrystallization, dolomitization, and other early diagenetic processes.

This 1970 Hafner Publishing Company edition is the first English-language edition, translated and updated by Albert V. Carozzi. At more than 500 pages, the volume covers marine and freshwater limestones, carbonate composition and texture, modern and ancient dolomites, dolomitization, and related sedimentary structures, accompanied by diagrams, illustrations, and photographic plates.

This particular copy has additional historical provenance from the Pan American Petroleum Corporation Research Center Geological Library, with institutional stamps and former library markings. Such provenance reflects the importance of carbonate geology to the large industrial and scientific research libraries maintained by mid-20th-century geological organizations.

Hardcover in original dark cloth with gilt lettering. Ex-library copy with institutional stamps, spine label, surface wear, and some warping of the pages. No dust jacket present. Interior appears clean and the volume remains a substantial reference work as well as an artifact from the development of modern sedimentary geology.
